This is a half marathon run, starting just off Tower Bridge, winding it’s way through the Limehouse Link tunnel, Canary Wharf, Wapping, finishing in Greenwich at the Cutty Sark.
The day started early with the team bus with over 55 runners on board, plus supporters, and cars on the road for about 5am. After the bus drop off, the bus team had the group pic in front of Tower Bridge – always a great shot.
The first wave went off at about 0830, and our last runners went off about 0910.
The temperature climbed early in the Limehouse Link tunnel, the straight into direct sunshine and an incline. This is still warm up zone but spectators are already out there making noise.
The route winds round the Billingsgate traffic light tree, and then into the GPS black hole that is Canary Wharf. before turning back towards Tower Bridge, for halfway.
By now, the temperature was hitting around 25ish degrees. That only increased on the way to the finish, with the huge crowds of spectators and finished runners adding noise in to the mix.
The last few miles were in full sun, with a few inclines thrown in. The relay teams managed to meet together at the gathering point a few hundred metres from the finish so that they could run in together.
Over 20 members hit a personal best (PB) time at either the half marathon or 5k relay distance at this event, showing how much hard work goes on in the weeks and months before an event.
This is event is definitely one of our biggest turnouts as a team – a couple of dozen people have already entered for 2027, and we’ve got 2 relay teams on the go too, once for some of our members aged over 70! The Orange Train rolls on to next year.
