Swim

Introduction

Deal Tri hold 2 pool-based training sessions throughout the week coached by our voluntary, qualified and experienced swim team: Torren Peakman, Darren Beeching, Ellie Matthews and Phil Peach (juniors). They have a wealth of experience between them and are very approachable, so please make the most of his resource but please also bear in mind that they give up their time freely to coach these sessions.

At each session the swim lanes are divided according to ability with a steady/training lane at each session. If you’re new to a session, please make yourself known to the ticket collector who will introduce you to the coach who will then brief you prior to the session and assign you an appropriate swim lane.

Swimmers have to be members due to insurance but it is possible to have one swim trial to see if you like us prior to joining the club. Please contact the swim captain to obtain further details.

Swimmers pay per session with reductions for buying books of tickets in advance. The cost is currently £5 per session or £45 for a book of 10 tickets

Swim Etiquette

  • Be prepared: Be on time for training sessions, wearing suitable kit for training and bring any equipment the coaches use
  • Pace: Place yourself in the lane where others are swimming at your pace. If you’re unsure, please ask the coach, and be prepared to move lanes depending on who is training in that session
  • Pace 2: Within your lane try to swim in pace order with the fastest at the front. Remember that your position in the line will probably change depending on the stroke or drill being undertaken!
  • Listen: Try to follow our coaches’ instructions and if you don’t understand please ask for clarification.
  • Resting at the end of a lane: Stay tucked into the corner if resting between sets so other swimmers have room to turn and push off.
  • Tumble turns: Only use this manoeuvre if you are confident there is no one behind you because you might collide as they reach the end of the lane while you’re still flipping over. If the coast is clear, make sure you exit the wall on the other side of the lane. The same applies to pushing off.

Swim Kit

Outlined below is a suggested kit list which our coaches recommend and which may be used in training sessions.

  • Pull Buoy: a generic adult sized foam swim buoy will be fine
  • Kick Board: a generic adult sized foam kick board
  • Fins: Typical rubber fins with a heel cup or full heel are suitable
  • Snorkel: For Tuesdays, we often use a snorkel during sessions – please see coach Darren or other members for details of the type
