Bike

Introduction

Our club rides are open to all members typically covering 35-45 miles but increasing to 50-55 during the summer months. Depending on numbers we may split into groups by ability, a slower group that typically rides at sub 14 miles an hour and a faster group.

We are fully inclusive and no one will be left behind, we will always sit up to regroup when required, but please ensure that you choose the ride which is suitable for your ability. Otherwise we ride as a bunch and the ride leader ensures no one gets left behind.

If you feel that you are newer to cycling and may want something a little shorter or slower, please do speak to our cycle captain to see what options we have.

Generally, our riders use road bikes on club rides (not time trial bikes). Other types of bike are slower, such as hybrids and MTBs, and if used on a club ride you may struggle to keep up. Your bike should be roadworthy and well maintained.

Cycling Etiquette

Never ride 3 abreast or on the wrong side of the road. When a car wants to pass, close in to the left or drop to single file

The club waits for everyone with the exception of those that ride off the front

Dont overlap your wheel with that of the rider in front of you, you are more likely to crash!

Stay close to the rider in front to save group energy

Share the pace by doing your time on the front without trying to push the pace. Everyone should be able to keep up. Stronger riders should just spend more time on the front and only ride ahead on hills and nominated sections.

Dont switch suddenly, hold your line

Signal or shout if you need to stop suddenly

Communicate clearly and tell someone if you have a problem, you won’t be abandoned

Signal or shout from the front backwards for cars – “Car front”, obstacles, potholes, gravel, slowing and stopping. Shout “clear” or “wait” to indicate traffic at a junction. Note: your safety is your responsibility.

Shout from the back for cars – “car back”, punctures, mechanicals or dropped riders

Cycling Kit

A road bike is generally required, no TT bikes or tri bars please.

Ensure your bike is in working order. The gears should change smoothly without the chain coming off. Both front and back brakes must work well, tyres should be in good condition and inflated to the correct pressure. This is for your safety and for those riding with you.

You must wear a helmet. Carry a pump or CO2 inflator, essential tools and spare inner tubes.

Please bring a drink and sufficient food for the ride. We will always aim for a coffee stop but this shouldn’t be relied upon to fuel your ride.

A mobile phone and cash or card are a good idea

Cycle Boxes

The club does have cycle boxes for hire, contact Margaret Reidy for details. Additionally, we do have an opportunity for you to buy a brand new one should you wish, at the amazing price of £50.00.  Please contact Margaret for more details.
